!Feliz Navidad! Can you believe Christmas is only a few days away? Just last night, we celebrated with over 80 kids from our "Ninos en Rescate" (Children at Risk) soccer ministry. The fiesta took place on our church's back patio and the kids came using public transportation from barrios far away and from the local church neighborhood. It was incredible! One of our church members donated 12 whole roasted chickens and pork from their carneceria, and two of the church ladies cooked rice, potato salad and mashed plantain - it was a real feast! The photo below is of my girls' soccer team (see how it's grown!)...
The next photo is of our head coach, Chamo, giving one of our little players his Christmas present (a water bottle with candy inside), which the kids just LOVED. My parents bought the 70 bottles at a great price while they were in Florida, and then the bottles were filled with candy from Northeast members. It made me smile to know that friends from Kentucky had given to my new little friends in the DR and I was able to see it all happen!
The three girls at right are holding their matching water bottles (the girls fought over the pink ones!) and come from a rough neighborhood called Los Guandules (literal meaning: the peas).
