Wherever you are, whatever your weather is like... stop for a second and picture July 4th.What do you see? Warm weather? Grilling? Loud music and fireworks? Kids running around in tank tops and flip flops? Well, welcome to our day today. It's a wonderfully breezy 80 degrees with palm trees swaying and PLENTY of loud music. It would be safe to say it's a little wilder here than in the United States on the 4th -- and our street has turned into the main thoroughfare since the street just a few yards away from us (called "Independence Street") is blocked.
Today, February 27, the Dominican Republic gained independence from Haitian rule. The Dominican Republic's first Constitution was adopted on November 6, 1844, and was modeled after our United States constitution.
The three fellows at left (Juan Pablo Duarte, Ramon Matias Mella and Francisco del Rosario Sanchez) form the "Trinitaria" who claimed that Santo Domingo and the Dominican Republic should be free and independent states.
Anyway, essentially the whole country gets the day off (well, except for the street vendors and the Haitians who work in construction) so it was quiet in the morning and now is definitely hopping.

Actually, the PTA had a hotdog lunch for us today, complete with potato salad, pasta salad, chips, and cookies. They were trying to create a summertime feeling in the midst of this awful winter in Chicagoland. Enjoy the weather while you can. I know that you pay for it during the summer when you swim in the humidity.
